PROFESSOR IN PEDIATRICS AND DIABETES

 Dr Kyriaki Karavanaki graduated from the Medical School of the Aristotelian University of Thessaloniki Greece in 1984 and was trained in Pediatrics in Athens (1 st Department of Pediatrics, University of Athens).  She was also trained for three years in Diabetes and Pediatric Endocrinology in the University of Bristol, UK, where she prepared her Doctorate Thesis (Doctor of Philosophy, Ph.D.). She was also trained in Pediatric Endocrinology for three years in the Endocrine Unit of the 1 st Department of Pediatrics, University of Athens, “Aghia Sophia” Children’s Hospital. She is a member of the E.K.E.D.I. (National Center of Research, Prevention and Treatment of Diabetes and its Complications of the Ministry of Health) and of E.I.E.P (Greek Obesity Society).  She is responsible for one out of 4 Pediatric Units of our Department. She is also responsible since 2003 for the Diabetes and Metabolism Clinic of our Department. This Diabetic Clinic was first created in 1993 by the Associate Professor Dr.Christina Karayianni, followed in 2003 by Dr.Karavanaki. Moreover Dr.Karavanaki is responsible for the treatment of all newly diagnosed children and adolescents with diabetes admitted in our Clinic and for the education of their parents. Her scientific work is rich and she has a special interest in the early diagnosis of associated autoimmune diseases and complications of type 1 diabetes, in the study of diabetic neuropathy with specialized electrophysiological techniques, in the study of bone metabolism and of psychosocial problems of children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes.
