Allergology and Clinical Immunology Unit
The Allergology and Clinical Immunology Unit of the Second Pediatric Clinic of the “P&A Kyriakou” Children’s Hospital, University of Athens, is the largest Pediatric Allergology center in Greece and is a certified European Center of Excellence. It has been operating for the last 30 years, demonstrating intensive clinical, educational and research activity.
More specifically, the Unit is comprised of the Outpatient Clinic and specialized Rhinitis, Food Allergy, Immunotherapy and Respiratory Allergy Clinics, providing special medical care to over 7000 children annually. In a national level, the Unit has been the first to adopt or even exclusively follow groundbreaking methods of allergy diagnostics and therapeutics.
Furthermore, the Unit is an authorized center for granting a full Allergology medical specialty. In the meanwhile, a lot of Medical school students, interns, specialized pediatricians and other medical professionals who encounter allergy related issues are trained here. Every year the Unit organizes several post-training two-day seminars, conferences, workshops and schools, with both Greek and European doctors included in the attendees.
Within the frames of the Research Lab of the Unit, a large number of research programs are carried out. The Unit has a leading role in the European and international efforts to understand and better treat allergies, contributing dozens of publications every year, thousands of bibliographic references internationally and active participation in all the international consensus (ICON) meetings.
On 12 July 2011, about five years ago, the new Clinics facilities of the Unit were inaugurated, occupying 229 sq. m. and including among others an Observation Unit, a Special Care Unit, Examination Rooms, a Lab, etc. The circular direction layout of the facilities is fully functional, allowing the maximization of the number of patients being tended to. The electromechanical facilities are built with all modern standards in mind, while the materials used are hypoallergenic and eco-friendly and the roofs are soundproof.
The Unit, directed by Professor and former President of the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (EAACI) N. G. Papadopoulos, employs around 30 people, including specialized doctors, nurses, researchers and administrative personnel.
